Aikido Alton, Coordination of Mind & Body through Motion

What is Aikido?

Aikido is a Japanese martial art that responds to attacks not with aggression, but understanding.

In Aikido, we put a lot of emphasis on blending with our practice partners. In fact, the Japanese word Ai in Aikido means harmony. This makes Aikido a fascinating martial art to study, and well suited for people who are not seeking struggle or competition. Rather, it develops balance, coordination, and sensitivity.

Aikido Techniques

We practice a range of techniques, divided into two groups. The first is a set of immobilisations that work by controlling our partners joints. The second set uses their own movement to throw them.

When you start to practice Aikido, you will learn the core skills that you will need to stay safe: breakfalls and rolls. With these, we teach methods for strengthening your posture and balance. Along the way, most people find the focus on unfamiliar movements increases their coordination.

Spectacular Throws?

You may see spectacular throws in Aikido videos on the Internet, and wonder if this is for you. Yes, these are very much part of the art, and as you learn and develop, you will become more able to fall safely. But we are very much aware of two things:

First, nobody comes to martial arts with these abilities. We take our responsibility to teach you safely very seriously.

Second, there are many reasons why some people may not be able to fully develop these skills, and that is fine. Duncan and Mike have reached the age where they are not as agile as some of their students. We teach respect for the abilities of our partners - you can enjoy Aikido and practice with us in safety.

Any more Questions?

We don't want to try to create an Aikido encyclopaedia here, but Duncan, Mike, and many members are very much Aikido enthusiasts. So we welcome you coming to our dojo (the formal name for our practice hall while we are using it) and asking us questions.

Only one thing beats watching Aikido live, and that is getting onto the mat and trying it for yourself. So, we make this as easy as possible. You just need to bring loose clothing and your first evening on the mat is on us.

So, come and meet us, ask us anything, and have a go. If you like it, regular Aikido practice could soon become a part of your life.
